The other story in this vain you hear about Ives is the time he stood
up to an audience hissing Ruggles' "Of Men and Mountains" and said "Quit
acting like a bunch of damned sissies--sit up and use your ears like men!"
(To which I add "at least that audience had the chance to hear Ruggles,
something that too many concert managers and radio programmers don't have
the guts to touch.)
