Announcing The Young Eight 2005 Emerging Composers Competition -
Deadline Extended to February 1, 2006

The Young Eight, an African-American string octet, announces its
2005 Emerging Composers Competition.  Applicants may be students or
professional composers and may be of any race, sex or ethnicity; however,
the compositions submitted must display African, Caribbean, African-American,
or Latin rhythmic or tonal influences.  Anything from jazz swing to a
rhumba beat is encouraged.  Submitted compositions should not have been
previously performed professionally or published.

Composers may submit 1 or 2 works.  All works must be for string octet
consisting of four violins, two violas, and two celli.  Three prizes
will be awarded for the best compositions, and will include premieres
at Black colleges and universities around the country in 2006.  Applicants
must be must be between the ages of 16 and 34 and must submit a completed
application form, three copies of each score, biographical information
and a $25 application fee for one composition, or $40 for two compositions.
Applications must be postmarked on or before February 1, 2006.  Entries
