Steve Schwartz asks if there is a recording out there worth having.

Yes!  To add to Steve's list I'd suggest Andre Previn's, recorded with
the RPO and Brighton Festival Chorus with a first-class roster of soloists
back in the 1980's....  if you can find it.

It's been in and out of the catalogue (latest on Carlton Classics at
bargain price) but has remained for me the best-sung version out there.

Previn has a better way than Pritchard (or the sloppy Hickox) with the
syncopated rhythms, and his soloists make for a more homogenous team
than the variable star-studded quartet in the early, benchmark Davis
recording for Philips which Steve describes well.

But if you can't get Previn, that first Davis is the one I'd personally
go for.
