I believe that composers wrote repeats for structural reasons, and unless
they have given us some reason to believe the repeat is indeed optional (a
foretaste of aleatoric music perhaps?), if it was written it was meant to
be played.  I don't buy the "no longer necessary due to familiarity"
argument, I was just reporting it.
