With all respect, I think that's an unfair statement.  In fact, the best
reason for composing that I've ever heard came from a rock musician,
namely Bob Dylan, when asked why he came out of semiretirement in 1974.
He said that no one else was making the kind of music he wanted to hear,
so he decided he would have to make it himself.
