Mahler - I think his 4th symphony is his most accessible, and its
outstanding quality is a nice bonus.  There are many excellent versions;
I'm partial to Alexander/Haitink on Philips.

Chopin - Start with the Preludes - takes up less than one disc, represents
Chopin at his most accessible, and is fantastic music. Check out Pollini
on DG (unfortunately, nothing else on the cd).
