It's unfortunate that the piece was so abused.  It's not just section
4, the Lone Ranger section, that is famous, but also section 2 (for
storm and violent scenes) and section 3 (pastoral scenes.) These featured
prominently in cartoons and in other films where royalty-free music was
desired.  As you now know, even section 1 is used for that purpose.

The overture is rather nice, perhaps not as elegant as the Semiramide,
but more melodically inventive.  Give it a chance.

In addition to the Fiedler, the Reiner / CSO is well played.  Toscanini
also did it well, also perhaps a bit driven as he aged.
