Donald Satz reviewed a Centaur CD of solo piano works by Andre Jolivet
(1905-1974), and it touched my heart to read it.

I had the privilege to study orchestration with Jolivet in Paris in
'71-72, and have in my library two of his works with personal inscriptions.
He was always polite and intensely interested in the music I brought in
for his critique, and I remember especially a discussion of weights and
balances in the Britten piano concerto (I was writing my own concerto
that year).  A lovely human being, and immensely musical; never boastful,
but someone I continue to admire for his purity of expression, and
willingness to help others.  -- Our lessons must have been pretty comic
to observers (such as Mme.  Jolivet, who hovered): I used my college
French, and he replied in his evolving English.  A wonderful year!
