I think Karl Boehm was good in this repertoire.  I don't know for "Salome"
but "Ariadne"; It is naturally on Deutsche Grammophon from 1956 IIRC.  Very
nice.  It was not rather expensive either, maybe I gave $12 for it or so,
so it is worth a try for you.
