Given that he was at their helm for 50 years and given that the orchestra
was fairly new when he took over, I think this might be better expressed
as:  he created the best disciplined of all Soviet orchestras.

If you want to start I suggest his Tchaikovsky 4-6 on DG, his Tchaik 6 on
Erato or his Shostakovich 10 on Erato (presuming these are still around and
not swallowed into the maw of the massive BMG sets)
