It is a modern masterpiece, (IMO).  Perlman and Mutter have recorded it.
There is also a recording with Louis Krasner and the BBC Sym that is of
great historical importance, being the 2nd performance ever of the work.
Krasner as you may know was the dedicatee of the work (although the
inspiration for it was the death of Manon Gropius).  He also recorded it
for Columbia in the studio, but I don't think that's available.  If Kremer
has a recording of it, that would also be worth hearing.  Stern's is also
available.  The Mutter also has a piece by Wolfgang Rihm, if you like him.
