This is just a short note, first to apologize about what seems to be
a mistake of mine -- apparently Searle's Piano Sonata was composed for
Liszt's 140th birthday and not the centenary of his Piano Sonata, which
took place 2 years later.  Also, mention was made of Searle's film music.
His score for "The Haunting" is a marvellous one, worthy of this excellent
movie, but it can hardly give any idea of his symphonies, which are much
more concentrated and challenging, of course.  The gap between his film
music and "serious" works is wider than it was in the case of Alwyn or
Rawsthorne, I guess.
