Incidentally, Olivia Stapp (the writer of the "Tosca" review, who sang the
role herself at SFO in 1987*) responded to today's www.sfcv.org Music News
item about the introduction of Super/SurTitles 22 years ago at a Toronto
"Elektra" with this note: "I was the Elektra! I will never forget the thrill
of actually having the audience understand the Hoffmannsthal text, besides
my joy at finally being able to communicate all of it - they screamed and
stood up immediately at the end. They GOT it big time. O."

* She was also the San Francisco Donna Anna in 1978, Santuzza in 1980,
Abigaille in 1982, and Anna Bolena in 1984.
