One of the things I very much enjoy on this list are list member comments
on recordings.

One recent personal discovery came in early December while driving and
listening to a piece for winds on the radio (WPRB in Princeton, NJ). In
response to my email the radio station reported the piece as Gounod's
Petite Symphonie for Winds and mentioned there are several very good
recordings. I selected the one I heard on the air. Barry Faldner
conducting the Sinfonia Orchestra of Chicago. (Koch 3-7067-2 H1) includes
the Debussy Symphonie in B minor, about 10 minutes; a very early work.
Nice and very interesting. It also includes the Symphonies No. 1, 2, 3,
and 5 of Milhaud. 3 movements each with about 3 to 7 minutes playing time
each. Very Milhaud and very enjoyable. I wasn't very familiar with this
music and am very happy to know it now. And Wow! What playing.

My cost was 2.5855263... Naxos CDs. ($11.79 Koch CD/ $ 4.56 Naxos CD at
EveryCD prices and ignoring shipping.) This has slowed my quest for more
Haydn symphonies and Haydn and Brahms chamber music. (I find Naxos a very
nice way to explore. With careful selection I can make strong additions to
my collection, and the knowledge gained is an aid to increased enjoyment of
works as funds allow and preferences develop.)

I am curious to know what other unexpected 'discoveries' list members have
recently made. For me, its been many months since I found such a pleasant
surprise. Any one else have any rare personal finds to share. No lists,
just that one that stands out.

Regards,

Tom Connor
