I remember listening to a riviting Enigma starting about 5 minutes in
on BBC Radio 3. It was live, mono, had a good sense of 'hall' with
excellent timp and bass definition. The conducting was passionate,
firey, nobel and, in the final variation, obviously a master of rubbato
and dramatic crescendi. I wanted to burst into applause wiht the audience
at the end - this was the Engima Variation for me!

The announcer afterwards said it was BBCSO live 1935 in Queens Hall
London, Toscanini.
