Jonathan stressed the importance of the weight of bass in this piece.
For a long time the only recording available here was by the Cambridge
University Music Society choir, recorded in the magnificent setting of
King's College Chapel, with organ accompaniment in the lower registers.
Despite the lowest imaginable recording fidelity, the full glory of
Tallis's work came through loud and clear. The Tallis Scholars' piece
may be well sung, but it sounds puny in comparison.

Perhaps Jonathan will moot Exeter or Truro Cathedrals as venues for the
next tour, - I'd relish the chance to hear "Spem in Alium" live in such
a setting.

Keith Bizeray.
