Today is Feb. 26, 2000; the history is of Medford, Oregon, where the Mail
Tribune looks back in time and finds this "Today in History" item from
1990:

"Ron Weatherford, retired principal of Medford's Roosevelt School
who spent 20-plus years involved with the Jackson County Community
Concert Association, related anecdotes about the association during
   a fund-raising luncheon...

"The pilot of a chartered plane carrying 100 Houston Symphony
musicians refused to land in Medford because he thought the runway
too short [a thought has has crossed my mind at times, JG] and landed
in Klamath Falls instead. Five minutes before concert time, Van
Cliburn was still at his motel talking on the telephone to his mother.
A troupe of Soviet Georgian dancers mistakenly hurled three daggers
into the gym floor at Hedrick Junior High School. Anna Moffo wanted
to know in advance the name of everyone who would attend a reception
   following her concert..."
