It may be wise to note Elliot Carter's comment on his Symphony for Three
Orchestras: "The listener is not intended to be able to follow the shifts
in perspective among the orchestras any more than the modulations in
'Tristan.'" (Not the exact words, but pretty much the point.) Pointing
once again to the notion that music need not be understood to be enjoyed.
