For the price of a movie Naxos allows you to explore. This cd includes
Englund's Second and Fourth Symphonies and his First Piano Concerto. This
is a winner. The symphonies, particularly the earlier one, owe something
to Sibelius but have echoes of Shostakovich and, perhaps surprisingly, the
Nielsen of the Sixth Symphony, yet the music seems fresh and original.
This is accessible music, yet decidedly not bland music. The concerto is
an attractive work, similar in concept to the later Rautavaara Concerti.
