On Friday nights, the ABC-TV Network Evening News ends with a segment
called "Person of the Week", modeled I assume on Time Magazine's "Person
of the Year". Last night (03/06), they did something very unusual: they
named a teenager who won a classical artist competition for young artists.
I didn't take the name down, but the story went on to show several
teenagers practicing, rehearsing and performing, and sending the message
that there IS a cohort of young people out there with more talent and
ability than the folks one normally sees on commercial TV. One would
have to congratulate ABC for their choice, but then feel a tinge of
regret that a story like this is comparatively rare. Public Radio has
"From the Top", which has a pretty good following; it's too bad nobody
at PBS has the wisdom to transfer this show to TV as an antidote for
teenage idol type shows!
