I agree with Larry about the fiendishly difficult technical challenges
posed by the Godowsky studies.  However, I would point to the words
"intellectually" and "musically" in Kinton's description of the challenge
of the Hammerklavier, and suggest that it is these which make it a
masterpiece and elevate attempts at its mastery beyond the realm of the
"merely" acrobatic.
