Richard Pennycuick wrote concerning Mendelssohn:

I have explored them, and they left me untouched. I did feel "something"
when listening to his string quintets, but that might have been the
movement of a kidney stone.

There are a large number of string quartets I'm not familar with; it's a
mighty large playing field. I currently have string quartets on order from
Tobias, Tansman, Miaskovsky, and Langgaard. I'll get there some day, and
Dave's post of a few weeks ago listing all the string quartets of the 20th
century of value to him gave me additional initiative to reach that goal.
