Dear list

I announce, with a huge sadness, the death of the composer, theorist,
and teacher Hans-Joachim Koellreutter (Freiburg/Germany, 2/sep/1915 -
Sao Paulo/Brazil, 13/sep/2005). He arrived in Brazil in 1937, just saved
from the Nazi fury. His musical contribuitions enriched the Brazilian
cultural background, but caused big controversies, because he introduced
the atonalism music in Brazilian Tropical milieu. He teached twelve-tone
composition to Claudio Santoro (composer, 1919/1989), Cesar Guerra Peixe
(composer, 1914/1993), Edino Krieger (composer, 1938), harmony to Tom
Jobim (bossa nova composer, 1927/1994), direction to Julio Medaglia
(orchestra director, 1938), Isaac Karabtchewsky (orchestra director,
1934), and to others important musicians. Also, in years 60-70, he
settled in India, Sri Lanka, South Korea and Japan. In these countries
he studied local music, teached Western Music, and created and administered
musical institutions. He loved the jazz music. His thoughts: "Music
is, at first, a contribuition for the widening of conscience and to
change man and society" "Much more important is the human being in all
dimensions".
