And don't forget that we are not hearing any 18th century music as it was
first heard, forget about repeats for the moment.  I'm talking about the
sound -- the tuning.  Middle C was mostly 420 cycles or so, not the 440+ of
today.  Of course, it was all over the lot, but mostly considerably lower
than we hear it today.
