Jon Gallant writes of Einar Englund in the present tense. Sadly, that's no
longer the case: Einar died on 27 June (ten days after his 83rd birthday),
after a long illness.

Enthusiasts for his music will be glad to know that the Tampere
Philharmonic Orchestra under Eri Klas begin recording his Cello Concerto
tomorrow (21 September) and will finish the week with the Sixth Symphony;
there's a concert in Tampere with both works on Thursday evening. In the
spring Klas and the TPO return to Englund to record the Fourth Symphony and
the music to Max Frisch's _Great Wall of China_. I'm flying out in time
for the concert this Thursday and will be writing in Fanfare on Einar
Englund and the recordings at the time of their release some time next
year.
