Yes, this has been gone over many, many times.  I personally think there is
only one way to go, use data base software like Microsoft Access.  Then you
can do very sophisticated searches in a large collection.  Other folks use
spreadsheets and even word processing software.  It all depends on what you
want to do with the catalog.
