Talking about sad music, I've always been surprised at the aria from
Gluck's Orfeo, where he bewails Euridice's second death, on the way
back from the underworld. It's entirely in the major key, and should
be redolent with grief. Sometimes it feels sad, other times it feels
not so sad! Actually it feels more annoyed than sad.
