While Schubert has a very strong case, I would like to call attention to:

Alban Berg - who seemed to have found a method which unifed both his inner
and outer desires.  Yes we lost much Schubert, but we have much Schubert.
We have so little Berg.

Robert Schumann - whose late music has often been thought of as poor, but
instead I find it filled with explorations to new directions.

Chopin - who was writing brilliantly all the way to the end.

Karl Maria vonWeber - who grew more brilliant and fantastic with each opera.
