"Idomeneo" (which has the dubious honor of being the first opera I ever saw
on stage) is revered by musicologists as being 1) a tremendous advance over
all preceding musical dramaturgy (a quartet is particularly revered) and 2)
the only opera seria still worth producing.  Every time I listen to any
part of it it still strikes me as a colossal bore, one of those pieces that
would be long forgotten were anybody else's name on it.
