Jos Janssen responds to Mimi Ezust:

I'm with Jos concerning both Herreweghe recordings on Harmonia Mundi.
But, I'll often return to the first set; it has a raw quality which I find
irresistable. More than that, there are a few recordings which tend to
redefine and enhance one's appreciation of a work, the composer, and also
other works and composers. Herreweghe's first St. Matthew Passion is, for
me, one of those recordings. Others include Beethoven's cello sonatas from
Coin /Cohen on Harmonia Mundi, Haydn's piano sonatas from Brendel/Philips,
and Schubert's piano sonata D 894 from Ranki/Hungaroton. These recordings
had a "multiplier" effect for me.
