M.  Laurence Sherwood writes skeptically about Arthur Honnegger's
Frenchness:

M. Sherwood's attempt to sunder Arthur Honneger from la France and
to render him unto the Helvetians shall not pass!  It is true that the
unfortunate Arthur was obliged to study music in Zuerich briefly, as
well elsewhere, also outside of the patrie, for scarcely more than a few
fleeting weeks, but otherwise he remained blithely enfolded lifelong at
the hospitable and nutritious bosom of Marianne.

There are "Swiss" all over the world, such as it is, who have never in
their lives been to Switzerland, who speak no Swiss dialect, but who lazily
remain registered in their home communities of which, properly speaking,
they are citizens.Of course, so are all the other "Swiss", for only by
extension may the lot of them then also claim citizenship of the Helvetian
Confederation.  But citoyen Honnegger lived in France, the nation of his
precious heart, for a greater portion of his life, I daresay, than did
Charles de Gaulle, Napoleone Buonaparte, or Charles Boyer.  He is, mon cher
M.  Sherwood, as indubitably French as Ivory soap is soap!  Dare I hope
that this settles the matter, and that it shall not be necessary for our
seconds to attend to other arrangements? With the customary expression of
considerable esteem, etc.
