At the end of his list from Classic CD, Don Satz questioned how
clarinettist Sabine Meyer made the list and noted that Richard Stoltzman
had not.
I'm a (strictly amateur) clarinet fan, and I have a few disks of
Stoltzman's, but I haven't figured out the basis of his reputation. It
seems that he's technically fine, but I don't care much for his tone (like
his reed is about an inch thick) and I just haven't gotten excited about
his phrasing. I'd prefer, say, Shifrin and Emma Johnson, respectively.
I won't avoid a disk because he's on it, but I won't run to the store to
get it, either.
Help me out here! What of his should I listen to to appreciate "King
Richard"?:-)
