My Drafts e-mail folder always has a BRO list in the works. It's beginning
to get to the whittling-down stage... so I feel a similar urge coming
on as Dave's, who asked for...

>...recommendations for the unusual or unique releases... [such as]
>a recording on Schwann of the two symphonies by the philosopher-pianist
>Eduard Erdmann (1896-1958). Has anyone heard this?

Yes: overwrought and laborious, few delights to my ear. Only at the end
of the 2nd symphony is anything like musical simplicity reached, making
for something enjoyable. If you were after a German, tonal & 20th century
composer, I'd suggest:

Josten, Werner {1885-1963}: Concerto Sacro I-II {w.David del Tredici,
piano}; 'Jungle' Symphonic Poem; Canzona Seria {American Symph./ Stokowski};
Symphony in F (Polish National Radio Orch./ Strickland. Total time:
72'03') $ 3.99 | AMERICA | ADD | BRO Code: 116283 | CRI CD 597

Or:
Hindemith, 'Works for 2 Pianists': 'Mathis der Maler' Symphony; Sonata
for Piano 4-Hands; Waltzes Op.6; Rag Time; Sonata for 2 Pianos. (Andreas
Grau & Gotz Schumacher. 77"57') $5.99 | GERMANY | DDD | BRO Code: 100895
>WERGO CD 6633-2 |

Yet another CD that puts the lie to legends about Paul H: dull craftsman.

Here's some of the cream of my last 8 or 9 BRO orders. Let's go by a few
nationalities:

USAmerican:
Mayer, William {b.1925}: Country Fair {Robert Nagel Brass Trio}; Dream's
End {Members of the St. Paul Chamber Orch.}; Miniatures for Soprano &
7 Players; Two News Items; Khartoum {Catherine Rowe, soprano w.Arthur
Weisberg conducting}; Brass Quintet {Iowa Brass Quintet}; Essay for Brass
& Winds {NY Brass and Woodwind Ensemble/ Balaban}; 'Eve of St. Agnes'
for Soloists, Mixed Chorus & Orch. (Peabody Conservatory/ Gregg Smith.
Total time: 72'58') $ 3.99 | AMERICA | ADD | BRO Code: 116392 | CRI CD 767

Flagello, N. {b.1928}: Divertimento for Piano & Percussion; Prelude,
Ostinato & Fugue; 2 Waltzes; Piano Sonata; 3 Episodes; 'Electra' for
Piano, Celesta, Harp & Percussion; 'Homage to Chopin' Etude. (Joshua
Pierce, piano w.Paul Price Percussion Ensemble) $ 6.99 | AMERICA | ADD
>BRO Code: 5811 | PREMIER PRCD 1014

Symph./ Schwarz) $4.99 | AMERICA | DDD | BRO Code: 13895 | DELOS DE 3074

Quartet) $ 2.99 | AUSTRIA | ADD | BRO Code: 115238 | CAMPION RRCD 1343

-- I reviewed this for MCML; nothing heavy, but much that's on the musical
mark.
