New Choral Music of Charles Griffin to be Premiered by The Manhattan
Choral Ensemble at Columbia University on June 8

A new choral work by Charles Griffin will be Premiered by The Manhattan
Choral Ensemble, Thomas Cunningham, Director on Friday, June 8 - 8 PM
at Earl Hall of Columbia University, 117th and Broadway in Manhattan.

This new work, Jaws, is a setting for soprano and tenor solo, off-stage
solo quartet and choir of the Carl Sandburg anti-war poem of the same
name, and is presented as part of the Choral Ensemble's New Music for
New York commissioning project.  Other works on the program will include
a new work for choir and cello by Patrick Castillo and other pieces by
Karen Siegel, and Davide Zannoni.  The performance will end with madrigals
of Monteverdi and familiar settings of favorite folksongs.

Tickets for the June 8 concert are $15, $12 for students and seniors.

The Manhattan Choral Ensemble (MCE) is a 40-voice community-based choir
dedicated to the passionate performance of an international and historically
varied repertoire.  In celebration of New York City's rich and diverse
heritage, the MCE performs in historic New York spaces and creates concert
events in partnership with the city's cultural organizations.  The MCE
also fosters the musical life of the city through innovative commissioning

Charles Griffin is an American composer currently living in Latvia. 
A native New Yorker, his works have been regularly performed throughout
the U.S.  as well as Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Canada, Europe and Asia
in such venues as Merkin and Weill Recital Halls in NYC and Washington
D.C.'s Kennedy Center and SpoletoUSA, Aspen, and International Cervantino
Festivals.  He has received grants from ASCAP, Meet the Composer's
Commissioning Music/USA, Queens Council on the Arts and New Dramatists,
and commissions from Ethos Percussion Group, the Piedmont Choirs, and
the Dale Warland Singers, among others.  His work has been included on
several CDs and has regularly been aired on major radio stations in the
U.S.  His 'Agnus Dei' was recently included on the program with which
the Peninsula Women's Chorus of Palo Alto, California captured Third
Prize in the Bela Bartok International Choir Competition in Debrecen,
