A recent CD purchase contains the prelude to Hindemith's When Lilacs
Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd. I've never heard the full work, but idly
wondered what a dooryard is because it's not a term used in my part of
the world. My dictionary says it can be either a front yard or a back
yard. Is the term still used? Does anyone know which one Whitman meant?
For the record, I once had a lilac tree in my back yard.
