I work in the label industry, and we have jobs that use FDA-approved varnishes for food contact, but they do not hold up to the dishwasher. You need a film laminate for that.

As for licking off the sides of the jars, no other food industry I know of is required to account for that -- although I wouldn't put it past Big Brother at some point!
