Although my experience with formic acid is limited I think you will get rust.
 I don't know that stainless steel is the answer - it isn't stain proof: it
just stains less.  Perhaps you should try coating exposed metal work with
petroleum jelly before using acid.  I am playing with using nylon
monofilament fishing line instead of metal wire in foundation.  So far, so
good.
