Rather than making claims based on annecdote, bias and  nostalgic memory,  isn't it better to consult the current research.

Dr Rangel tells me a lot of the urban yards in San Diego (her home turf) has evolved to landscapes which requires little or no water. And to address Peter point due to fire concern the eucalyptus in northern part of the state seems to be steady being remove in the urban landscapes.
