>To put that in perspective, in the US about 47,000 people die each year due transportation accidents. Another 30,000 kill themselves. Accidental poisoning accounts for only 2,500. What does the precautionary principle say about this? 

Looks to me like more precautions are needed - but caution is not something that we associate with America (rightly or wrongly).
