It was apparently sustainable before chemical fertilizers and 
pesticides/herbicites were introduced. :))  Going back even further, 
the founding fathers in the US thrived on and lived long on what must 
have been organic food.  Anybody know if any man-produced chemicals 
were in agricultural use back then?
