"trashing the hive"

Bob,
Would you and/or Randy explain more what you mean by "trashing the
hive"? I assume it is a complete breakdown and reassembly of hives into
nucs for the purpose of making increase, but what goes where and when and
why? Have either of you written articles about this procedure in one of
the bee mags? Is it more strictly a commercial operation? Advantages?
Timing? Etc? Is there any reason for a hobbyist to do this?
