Firstly, consult Allen Dicks web site where he has info on the subject.

To avoid all the fuss and uncertainty in manufacturing this product you can
buy it by the block from bakery wholesalers. Just cut it to the required size
and bag it to prevent evaporation of the water content, and cut the side in
contact witht he cluster to give them access and let them just eat it out of
the bag.

It is usually the product they use for icing cakes and you MUST get the plain
additive and flavouring free stuff. The best is mechanically produced, ie
never cooked or boiled, and is a beaten together combination of liquid
glucose/fructose and powdered sucrose.
