Mites will rise to the surface in pure water, they will sink fast in
pure alcohol, and depending on concentration of alcohol in water will
move different directions.  A surfactant like detergent will make them
sink even in pure water.  All of this needs to be considered for
reliability of mite washes.  A good test with any technique is to wash
off mites with a test solution, and after that verify fall with an
intense shaking in alcohol at 70%.
