Perhaps this is just another example of the kind of thing that cannot be reliably 
demonstrated on demand.

Just as some people and groups of people can do things other groups can 
not do for various reasons, such as experience, training, history, resources, 
etc., perhaps colonies of bees have unique behaviours and may or may not 
discover all their capabilities.  

Could it be that such things are manifestations of inventiveness or problem 
solving.  We consider it as such when people and lab animals demonstrate
ingenuity in solving problems presented to them.
