What does n represent in this context?

Just glancing this over and not reading the papers referenced (since my
mind is already made up and I don't want to be influenced by more
made-up 'facts' :)), I have to say that these suggestions look highly
speculative to me.

I always have to wonder about the word, 'inferred'.

I see too far too much inferring and too little proving on all sides of
this debate for my comfort.
