It would be easier to explain about almonds if you and I were standing in
the area. Nets will not work for many basic reasons. The first being
almonds are flooded and if nets were on the ground you would have a huge
mess. Storage of nets is a problem as mice love to chew holes in nets. I
store truck nets in 55 gallon barrels.
Next the machines which pick up almonds work very well and the machines
which shake the trees would have to be on top the nets. The cost in labor of
nets would be huge. Repair a constant issue if placed on the ground. Would
work for a careful small scale producer but not in my opinion for the grower
with millions of trees and hired labor.
Another net issue in California:
We suggested cover nets for the Clementine orange growers but the net idea
was quickly rejected. Instead setting a beekeeper 2 mile limit on hive
placement was accepted. Legislation has proven to be poor solution many
times with beekeeping issues. The Clementine's I had yesterday with
breakfast
had seeds. About like a tangerine. Not a big deal to spit out but people are
spoiled.
Nets would have produced a better results for the Clementine orange growers
( than hive restrictions) as the trees are small ( or the ones I have seen)
but their choice was to legislate migratory beekeepers.
