This fool beekeeper shook a honey frame over the toilet to drown a small
hive beetle and ended up fishing out a bee. This bee turned out to be the
virgin queen from a hive of a distant apiary that was in the process
of superseding. She had been in my bin of honey frames for a week and it
would be a few more days before I would be able to go back to that apiary
and return her to her hive. I figured she had already missed the window of
opportunity to mate, so I didn't try. Afterwards I wondered if I had been
mistaken.

How long can a virgin queen be kept from mating and still become a viable
mated queen?
