Thanks all for the great references.  Just a couple of days ago I was using
the 'scope to confirm the first incoming pollen in a test yard--although I
already had a very good idea of what it was, and had previously ID'd it, I
still struggled to confirm by comparing it to images on the Web.  Just as
with anything else, I'd expect that one's expertise would correlate with
the number of hours spent peering at pollen grains through the 'scope.

What would be really useful would be an identification dichotomous key into
which you could first input your location, which would then vastly narrow
down the possible species, and then a few questions that could take you to
genus.
