I had always figured that this was due to due to the fact that the centre 
slice of a sphere has far more volume than slices taken vertically farther 
out.  I guess there is more to it than that.

As with many things, we see what we are looking for and often overlook 
obvious things.  When looking at sticky boards, we were counting mites, not 
considering where in the cluster they might be concentrated.

I can show pictures and also not bore the list with my ruminations.
