"What I was specifically wondering was whether anyone could see any
advantage to an absorbent insulation rather than nonabsorbent. Or is straw
simply a relic from when nonabsorbent insulation was not available."

I suspect, but have no way of knowing for sure, that both straw and
Homosote boards are relics from the times when nonabsorbent material was
not available *AND* from the time when it was thought at upper ventilation
would be harmful to the cluster. I can remember the time when the latter
was the case...it was not all that long ago. Certainly those that I have
questioned have the attitude "we still do it because it works", and who can
argue with that?
